The Alliance of Hazardous Materials Professionals (AHMP - formerly known as Academy of Certified Hazardous Materials Managers  - ACHMM) is a hazardous materials professional organization that is comprised of 60 Chapters with over 8,500 members in 34 States, including the District of Columbia and Guam.  In 2006, the first international chapter was formed in Bangalore, India.  The Finger Lakes Chapter of the Academy of Certified Hazardous Materials Managers (FLACHMM) was formed in 1995.

Certified Hazardous Materials Manager - The CHMM designation / certification is earned by a professional who has demonstrated the competence and qualifications to handle the responsibility for the complex aspects of hazardous material management with regards to environmental and health and safety requirements.

The Certified Hazardous Materials Practitioner (CHMP, pronounced “CHaMP”) is a credential established by the Institute of Hazardous Materials Management (IHMM) to provide recognition for the non-degreed individual who has at least 5 years of experience (or an AAS degree plus 3 years of experience) in the practice of handling hazardous materials in a wide variety of specialized activities associated with public health and safety, transportation, security, and environmental protection. The CHMP certification is related to IHMM’s Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), but focuses more on hands-on or workplace experience as a practitioner and less on the corporate management aspects of the field.

The Goals of the CHMM & CHMP programs are to:

  • Provide credentialed recognition to hazardous materials professionals with specific levels of education, experience and competence
  • Identify qualified hazardous materials managers to government, industry and academia
  • Foster continued professional development
  • Facilitate transfer of knowledge and experience
Why you should consider Certification, in addition to your college education...
A four-year college degree seen for generations as a ticket to a better life is no longer enough to guarantee a steadily rising paycheck.  What employers  want from workers nowadays is more abstract and less easily learned in college

CHMM & CHMP Certifications are awarded by the Institute of Hazardous Materials Management (IHMM) which was founded in 1984. A summary of the requirements and how to obtain this certification is available on the IHMM website.

What is the Value of the CHMM/CHMP Program?

  • Address Environmental, Health & Safety, Management Principles, Technology, in addition to Laws and Regulations

  • Provides a nationally recognized technical qualification for mid to senior level professionals

Why Hire CHMMs/CHMPs?

  • Identify professionals qualified to protect the public's health & safety

  • Levels psychological playing field between the regulators & regulated community

  • Presence of qualified people often mitigates environmental violations

  • Potentially limits insurance liability of organizations who employ skilled & knowledgeable professionals
