AHMP National Overview Course

The FLACHMM Essentials of Hazardous Materials Management (EHMM) Course for 2010 is completed!

Taking the Exam

The CHMM Exam (administered through IHMM) is being conducted through computer based testing.   If you are planning to take an overview course and want to sit for the exam soon afterward, apply to IHMM six weeks before the start of the course.  Process your application to take the exam through IHMM, then choose the date you prefer to take the exam in the future (once accepted).

FLACHMM has learned there is a testing location in Rochester and in Buffalo, and that the computer based testing program will be available for participants to take the exam near the end of May.  Exam locations are available on the IHMM website (www.ihmm.org). 

Course Description:

The course consists of a comprehensive review of federal environmental laws and regulations and applicable health and safety requirements. The course is designed to assist individuals to prepare for the CHMM national certification examination administered through the IHMM. It does not guarantee passage of the CHMM national certification exam.  

The IHMM CHMM program is accredited by the Council of Engineering and Scientific Specialty Board (CESB), an independent, voluntary organization that recognizes, through specialty certification, the expertise of individuals practicing in engineering and related fields. This course provides instruction on federal laws and regulations, technologies and practices in an overview fashion that highlight and emphasize what is important for a hazardous materials manager to know and provides essential information for the hazardous manager to better conduct their job.

Topics Covered:

  • The statutory and regulatory framework of environmental and hazardous materials management.
  • Compliance Standards and work practices on:
    • Hazardous Waste Treatment, Storage and Disposal;
    • Hazardous Material Storage;
    • Radioactive materials;
    • Workplace safety;
    • Packaging;
    • Spills;
    • Cleanup; and
    • Hazards assessment and communication;
  • Basic and applied hazardous materials management principles, controls and concepts
  • Science and technology of hazardous materials management:
  • Chemical and physical characteristics;
  • Sampling and analysis;
  • Biological effects of hazardous materials;
  • Toxicology; and
  • Geology/hydrology

Topics covered will address the body of knowledge associated with identification and management of hazardous materials; impact upon and protection of human health and the environment; releases of hazardous materials to land, air, water, and groundwater; restoration of the environment from hazardous materials; compliance with laws (environmental regulation for specific purposes); and multi-media application of environmental management that are central features of hazardous materials management topics covered in the certification examination.

Participants will receive an extensive course manual and a copy of the AHMP “Hazardous Materials Managemaent Desk Reference."  Exam participants may also wish to contact IHMM to purchase of the most recent edition of the IHMM's “Handbook on Hazardous Materials Management” as a study reference in exam preparation. 

Who Should Attend:

Experienced individuals such as technicians, engineers, scientists, facility supervisors and managers, and or regulators, who have assigned duties or responsibilities related to management of hazardous materials and environmental, health and safety (EHS) responsibilities.

Course Prerequisites:

While targeted for experienced professionals and technicians, there are no prerequisites to take this training course.  However, there are prerequisites for qualifying to take the subsequent IHMM examination.

Please be advised, IHMM charges all students an annual $70 Certification Maintenance Fee upon successfully passing the examination. Other membership organizations are voluntary options for CHMMs, CHMPs, HMMTs, and other professionals.  Currently FLACHMM has a $20 annual fee and AHMP has an $85 annual membership fee.

Continuing Education Units:

The training course meets criteria for the nationally accepted Continuing Education Units (CEU). Contact course sponsor for additional information.
